Bolivian President Evo Morales is set to sway other United Nation countries to follow his country’s lead by enacting a new law which gives the planet Earth the same moral protection as humans currently receive and includes land, rivers, trees and animal life.
Many South American countries are following suit and a growing ecological movement is forming in the region. Eco-awareness isn’t a new thing by any means but raising even more awareness can only be a good thing provided the laws do not exploit individuals over corporations or companies which are known to be heavy polluters or environmentally destructive.
Morales is hoping the bid will mean implementation of the law by all UN countries meaning recognition and protection of the natural environment that unscrupulous people have tried to “dominate and exploit” to such an extent that the “well-being and existence of many beings” is now under serious threat.

Evo Morales is cleaning up Bolivia with the Law of Mother Earth's Rights and hopes the rest of the world will do the same
The news of this new law has found a lot of opposition with many showing utter outrage and anger towards the notion of the planet being a living entity. What most dissenters fail to realise is that the Bolivian law also protects them, especially the right to be free from pollution. While many people try to discredit the idea for religious reasons (such as God being the only thing that should be worshipped and therefore ‘worshipping the planet’ is tantamount to following satan), surely they can see the benefit of not having to breathe in harmful fumes or emissions.
There is no denying that the planet is suffering due to mankind’s intervention and plundering, you only have to look at the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico last year courtesy of BP, or the mess Japan is currently in. This rock that we live on provides us with a home, warmth, air, water and life – vital things that the loss of, would mean the end of our existence; should we therefore not respect it?
While many a churlish point is hurled without any sound reasoning or factual basis, the move has to be a positive one. The environment does need protection from some humans; those who seek to gain without giving anything back and walk all over others in their pursuit of wealth, but we also need protection from those same people.
This isn’t an argument about a human population cull or whether insects should stand trial for killing other insects or not; nor is it about whether the Earth should be sued for creating earthquakes; it’s simply about RESPECT for the planet, and those who find that idea offensive should really stop and ask themselves why that is.
